Tribute to Clipper Fest from Foyle Port

Foyle Port has issued a huge thanks to all the port staff, and the Marine Team in particular, for their hard work in managing the arrival, stay and departure of the 10 Clipper yachts and their crews.

Harbour Master Bill McCann said it took two years of planning to get ready for the event and that the Marine Team had been working full-time on Clipper for the past six months.

“For the Clipper Round the World Race, we had to put in about 400 metres of additional pontoons and infrastructure, with the help of Loughs Agency funding, at the Derry quays and down in Greencastle, where the official departure for Race 14 took place.”

“But everything went smoothly and according to plan and the port is delighted with the huge response from the people of Derry and Donegal for the entire event. It was great to see everyone from the city and from Inishowen turning their faces to the Foyle for the week, and welcome so many visiting vessels who came to join the Clipper festivities.”

Bill McCann believes that Clipper’s visit to Derry and the newly completed Foyle Port Marina will renew interest in sailing and maritime events, and that it will increase the chances of securing similar large scale events in the future for the Foyle and the city.
