‘Tyres’ to get back insaddle for NW ‘CycleAgainst Suicide’

‘Tyres O’Flaherty’ is looking forward to cycling from Strabane to Londonderry and back next Saturday (August 6) in aid of the Cycling Against Suicide charity.

Holywood-actor Michael Smiley - who first rose to prominence when he appeared as the rave-loving cycling courier alongside Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in ‘Spaced’ - says he’s really looking forward to supporting such a good cause.

“It will be a real honour to ride with yiz,” he remarked via social media. “This is such an important charity.”

Following his breakthrough in ‘Spaced,’ Mr Smiley went on to appear in over a dozen well known British series, as wells as feature films such as ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ ‘Perfume,’ ‘Burke and Hare,’ and ‘Kill List.’

Cycle Against Suicide is a voluntary organisation that aims to: raise awareness; offer reassurance that it’s OK not to feel OK and to ask for help; and to direct people towards critical help if necessary.

Its motto is that “Together, shoulder to shoulder, we can Break the Cycle of Suicide on the island of Ireland!”

The organisers of the Londonderry cycle stated: “This Spin Off will be a first for another reason as we have Michael Smiley, comedian, actor and avid cyclist cycling the Spin Off with us.

“This Spin Off gives us a great opportunity to get our message out in Northern Ireland.”

The cycle will start at the Fire station on Railway street in Strabane at 2pm travelling to Londonderry and, after a short break, returning to Strabane by 5pm.
