Tyrone Rose Genevieve Scullion set to bloom in Tralee

Inspirational Genevieve Scullion, a Multimedia Design student with a passion and talent for music from a family of nine, was crowned last week as this year’s Tyrone Rose.

The twenty-one year-old’s glittering CV is enough to give previous winners of the title an inferiority complex.

Among her achievements is a stint teaching English and Maths to the Massai tribe in Africa, an Ulster final winner’s medal for Killeeshil football club, and a variety of County, Ulster and All Ireland titles for her schools, St Mary’s PS and St Patrick’s Academy, and University of Ulster.

Genevieve said she was deeply honoured to have been picked to represent her county. “The selection process was brilliant” she told the Tyrone Times. “The other Rose entrants represented themselves and their families with great pride. It was humbling to be selected as the Tyrone Rose and knowing that I will represent my family, community and lovely County in Tralee is very exciting.

“I loved the buzz I received from supporters, even before the selection night, and the continued support since then from people across the county makes the whole experience very rewarding.”

Genevieve follows in the path of fellow Killeeshil native Michelle Kelly, who was last year’s Scotland Rose. She is a talented singer and musician, able to play several instruments, but is most happy, she says, playing the guitar and singing.

For two consecutive years, she was a Scor Sinsear solo singing competition county finalist, as well as an Ulster finalist alongside her twin Anne and other Killeeshil club mates in the ballad group.

A keen traveller, which is surprising given that her first overseas flight was made at the age of 16, Genevieve is a trustee of the charity Tanzaniaid, and has volunteered with the Dromantine and Michaela Foundation camps.

She is currently studying an Interactive Multimedia Design degree in Jordanstown and has already designed material and websites for a host of charities and community organisations.

“Designing is my hobby and luckily for me has progressed to a career”, she added. “I help out my family, local charities, schools and individuals by designing promotional material and websites. These include; Michaela Foundation, Camp Dromantine, Rise of the Roses, TanzaniAID, Friends of Africa, St Mary’s Cabragh and Killeeshil GAA.

“I designed the book cover, set up the website for book sales and a Facebook page for engagement for Dad’s novel ‘The Left Handed Hurl’.

“I designed the Michaela Foundation Girls’ Summer Camp Journal – this is my favourite project and piece of work to date. I am honoured that campettes record their camp experiences in the journal I designed.”
