Blasting ban unlikely to have cost industry

THE chief of the Quarry Products Association in Northern Ireland says it hasn’t made any estimate of how much a five day blasting ban to facilitate the G8 will have on the industry in terms of productivity.

However, Gordon Best said early discussions with the PSNI - as long ago as March - meant members of the association were able to plan ahead for the moratorium and thus it was unlikely to have had much of an effect if any.

The Regional Director of the QPANI told the Sentinel: “Anyone who had orders to fulfil has more than likely had an extra couple of blasts in the run up to the start of the five. day moratorium.”

He told the paper: “QPANI have had no complaints from members in relation to any inconvenience caused.”
