Nephew of Belfast Agreement negotiator defects to Sinn Féin

The nephew of a former Fianna Fáil Foreign Minister who negotiated the Belfast Agreement has defected to Sinn Féin.

Chris Andrews - a nephew of David Andrews and grandson of Dublin IRA man Todd Andrews, said: “Joining a new party was not an easy decision for me as my family has been involved in Fianna Fáil since its foundations.

“But it has become very clear to me that the party no longer represented the ideals or values of its founders including my grandfather.”

The former TD was elected to the Irish parliament in 2007 but lost his seat following the general election of 2011.

Mr Andrews is a cousin of TV personality Ryan Tubridy and comic David McSavage.
