Later Nicola Janette Sommers (41), of The Rope Walk, Coleraine, told another constable she “watched films and was capable of self-defence” before punching him on the side of the face on January 5 this year.

Coleraine Magistrates Court was told that at at 1.40am at Killowen Street in Coleraine the defendant was involved in a dispute about a taxi and she asked police to take her to the Causeway Hospital in the town because of her “mental health”.

The court was told the woman grabbed the police officer before punching the other officer in the face “for no reason”.

Defence solicitor Garrett Greene said that after being spoken to by police regarding the taxi incident, Sommers indicated she had issues regarding her mental health but there was a considerable delay in the hospital and she said she wished to leave but the police officers told her to wait for medical treatment.

The solicitor said she didn’t wish to remain in the hospital and, quite properly, in the circumstances the officers told her to stay.

District Judge Liam McNally told Sommers: “The police were doing their best to assist you and this was how you rewarded them.”

Sommers was given a three months jail term, suspended for 18 months.
