Work on Loughshore Park makeover to begin soon

NEWTOWNABBEY Borough Council has been awarded funding of £670,000 by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) towards the development of Jordanstown Loughshore Park and surrounding area.

The total cost of the project is estimated at 1.37m, with the Council providing the remainder of the funding.

NITB has contributed funding through the Tourism Development Scheme.

NITB is funding a range of projects being developed along the Causeway Coastal Route, the aim of which is to inspire the visitor and make the route a “must see” Signature Project destination.

Mayor of Newtownabbey, Alderman John Scott said: ‘It is great to see the wonderful coastline in Newtownabbey being recognised as the gateway to the Causeway Coastal Route.

“We are excited about this project as it is a prime opportunity for the council to attract more tourists to the borough and for them to be able to explore the coastal walkway with its fantastic panoramas of Belfast Lough.”

Siobhan McCauley, NITB Director of Product Development added: “It is essential that throughout tourism we are always striving to improve the experience for the visitor to Northern Ireland and NITB is delighted to be supporting this project through the Tourism Development Scheme.

“The work which will take place at Jordanstown Loughshore Park will enhance the surrounding area and improve the infrastructure of the world famous Causeway Coastal Route ensuring visitors have a unique and memorable experience.”

The project will include the installation of a new performance area, a new modern amenity block, an extended and refurbished caravan park and the installation of a number of innovative public art pieces along the coastal walkway between Loughshore Park and Hazelbank Park and within Loughshore Park.

Work will start in Spring this year and be completed in March 2011.
