A contest has been avoided after the prosecution agreed to withdraw a charge of assaulting police, whilst the remaining matters of disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest were admitted.

East Tyrone Magistrates Court heard police were carrying out a traffic patrol in the James Street area of Cookstown at around 1.45am on December 29 when they were alerted to a group of people shouting and swearing.

Aaron Brunton (21) from Dromdallagan, Draperstown was noted to be aggressive and confrontational, running into and out of the crowd. On being apprehended by police, he refused to be handcuffed. “You can’t arrest me for swearing,” he said. A defence solicitor said his client has no record at all and it was out of character. He was given 100 hours community service.
