Athletics: Acorns contingent take on Mussenden Challenge

Bliadhan Glass, Niall Hasson, Cathal Cassidy and Pat Groogan took part in the scenic Mussenden Challenge 10k around the Castlerock and Downhill area of the North Coast.

This multi-terrain event started on roads, then moved to trails and finally finished with a beach section – a technical course to say the least.

The lads put in a solid shift with Bliadhan taking 3rd place overall in 38.18, Cathal was 6th in 40.32, followed by Pat who secured 13th spot in 42.52 and Niall also finished inside the top 20 (18th) completing the distance in 43.56.

Beragh 5 Mile– Shane Donnelly and James Little participated in this race on Saturday, which had some top athletes including Vinceny Kiprotich (recent winner of the Larne Marathon) and Stephen Duncan (Omagh Harriers) who won the Beragh 5 last year.

Shane had a fantastic run finishing in 7th place overall in a time of 29.39 and James crossed the line in 38.45.

Parkruns – Aidan O’Hagan Diarmuid O’kane were placed 2nd in their respective events. Karen O’Kane was 2nd female at Musa and there were several more PB’s this week including Annemarie McKernan, Edel McGuckin, Stacey Hinfey, Andra McKeown and Hollie Irwin, to name but a few. Well done to all those who achieved personal bests.

Couch to 5k – April to June. This new nine week programme starts in April with registration nights on Monday 13th April in Magherafelt (Meadowbank) and on Tuesday 14th April in MUSA. Registration is available on activeni.org.

Training and venues- Meadow Bank Sports Arena (Magherafelt)- Monday and Wednesday- Couch to 5k programme at 6.45pm. Monday- Senior Training at 7pm. Wednesday- Senior Training at 7.30pm.

Mid Ulster Sports Arena (Cookstown)- Tuesday and Thursday- Couch to 5k and Senior Training at 6.30pm.
