Ballymoney boys compete in Ulster Athletics Games

After a successful and very enjoyable winter season, three of the Ballymoney P6 mini rugby team decided to test their acceleration, speed and grit against the best in the business by competing in national athletics.

Having recently won medals in Belfast the three boys then travelled, along with hundreds of other competitors, to the Ulster Athletics Games in Donegal. Against some very tough competition the boys were very successful.

Ryan O’Kane won gold in the 60m sprint with James Wright placing fourth and Rowan Montgomery, having won his heat, finishing sixth by a narrow margin of 0.01 of a second. Ryan and James also qualify for the All Ireland 60m finals at the end of June.

In the 4X100m relay the boys along with fourth member Neil Maloney had to overcome a strong team from Co Cavan who qualified for the final 0.03 of a second ahead of the local boys. The team ran a very strong race and beat their qualifying time by 1.5 seconds to win gold. The relay team also qualified for the All Ireland 4X100m finals.

Their mini rugby coach, Craig Thompson said their hard work and determination all year had paid off. He added: “The whole club was delighted in their success.”

The boys would like to thank Craig and the other coaches for their hard work, enthusiastic coaching and encouragement. The boys met at the mini rugby which is a great place to make friends and learn the value of teamwork etc.

The boys also appreciate the help of their running coaches at BAAC and Springwell. James would also like to thank his swim coaches for all their hard work throughout the winter in terms of core strength and CV fitness etc.
