Boss aims for one more new face

DAVID Jeffrey admitted he was close to signing one more player before the window closes on Monday after watching his team defeat Newry 5-0 at Windsor Park.

"We just have to get a few things sorted out and that be will the final move we will make during the window," said Jeffrey.

Linfield moved to within a point of new leaders Cliftonville with their first league win in the last six attempts but they did not have things all their own way despite the impressive scoreline.

Jamie Tomelty fired the Blues ahead in spectacular fashion with a stunning goal early in the first half, his second goal in two games. "I've hit about 20 like that so it was nice to finally see one go in," said the midfielder after the game.

Despite taking the lead Linfield could not forge ahead and the visiting keeper made two fine saves to keep his team in it at the break.

Newry surprised the home side after the restart and created two great chances with Alan Blayney pulling off a crucial save to deny the visitors from pulling level.

Sub Curtis Allen made an impact when he came off the bench, making it 2-0 from close range after Tomelty's corner fell at his feet and then Peter Thompson headed in number 3-0 to end Newry hopes.

Allen and Thompson hit the net again to round off a fine display for the Blues.
