Busy week for runners

Springwell Runners made the long journey to the Necarne Equestrian Centre, Irvinestown for the penultimate race of the well supported Athletics NI Cross Country League.

The Enniskillen Cross Country was hosted by Enniskillen Running Club. The heavy rain of the last few weeks left the undulating course wet and muddy.

After the competitive junior races had sufficiently warmed up spectators, the senior (and veteran) ladies took to the line for their 4.5K race.  This brought the much awaited dual between Karen Alexander (Sperrin Harriers) and Michelle Sturm (Omagh Harriers); in the end, it was Karen Alexander who claimed victory, after crossing the line in 19:59.  Michelle finished in 20:08 (2nd place), her Omagh Harriers club mate, Julie Butler, ran well to complete the podium places in 20:32.

Sonia Knox led the Springwell Ladies home finishing 7th in 20:59 (1st F40) closely followed by Gillian Wasson 21:12 (1st F35), Alison Rankin 21:39, Nicki Frizelle 23:16, Karen McLaughlin 23:33, Rebecca Conlon-Elwood 24:30, Lindsay Holden 24:45, Catherine Bell-Allen 25:37, Alison McAllister 26:15, Lynn Montgomery 26:30, Sarah Chestnutt 27:37, Debbie Tutty 28:55, Ursula Harper 29:47, Angela Calderwood 30:03, Margaret Edgar 31:11 and Shirley Jackson 33:54.

Springwell Juniors were in action over the weekend at the NI & Ulster Age Group Indoor Champions at the Meadowbank Arena, Magherafelt.

Boy’s U13 - Eoghan Gormley 60m 9.59, 600m 4th 1.53.36.

Boy’s U14 - Adam Campbell 60m 9.58, 800m 2.57.68.

Girls U15 - Mollie Spence 60m 9.58.

Boy’s U17 - 800m Zac Hutchinson 3rd 2.09.31, Robert Simpson 2.28.29.

Girls U19 - Emma Lusby 1500m 1st 5.35.62.

Normal service was resumed at Portrush parkrun on Saturday. The low tide at 9.00am meant the sand returned and the traditional route came back into play. That being said, it still wasn’t easy, the headwind from 2K to the turning point took your breath away and the intermittent rain didn’t help.

Twenty nine runners were not put off by the conditions and put their toe to the start line. Lynn Finnegan (29:29) was the on PB and Ciaran Reid (28:54 was the only first timer.

Springwell’s Chris Denton was first male home in a time of 18.39 and team mate Kay Hack was first lady at 26.56.
