Guy leads Glenavon charge

Guy Bates grabbed a brace as Glenavon produced a storming second half to secure three points and their first league win of the season at Mourneview Park.

Warrenpoint struck the front in controversial circumstances just before the break when the referee’s assistant spotted an infringement in the area involving Glenavon defender Gareth McKeown. A penalty was awarded which brought uproar from the fans and the Glenavon bench but McCabe kept his cool to slot in the opener.

It could have been worse on the home team had Hughes made the most of breaking clear to fire past Coleman but the ball rebounded off the base of the post.

Glenavon only had one good chance of note when David Rainey fired over the bar from close in when it seemed easier to score.

The Glenavon revival started right from the whistle as they pushed forward and after a couple of goalmouth scrambles they were rewarded on 62 minutes when Mark Patton got up to head home a great cross from Andy McGrory. Then Gary Hamilton sent Patton in the clear and the winger slipped the ball to Bates who made no mistake from close in.

Bates made it 3-1 as he raced clear to round the keeper and slot home on 88 minutes.

A great second half effort which sees the Lurgan Blues move into third place in the table.
