David Bailie blows the field away with an exceptional score

David Bailie amassed an incredible 46 points to win the Mascott Construction sponsored Saturday stableford competition by five points from his nearest competitor at Rockmount Golf Club.

With such a high score the handicap secretary has cut David from 17 to 12, a sizeable reduction by any standards.

Two players scored 41 points with second place going to Richard Armstrong (21) second. The low section (0 – 11) was won by Owen Flynn (11) with 39 points. The middle section (12 – 18) was won by Eamon McKinney (18) the second player to score 41 points. The high section (19 – 28) was won by Brian Rea (19) with 39 points. The gross prize went to Jonny Patterson (02) with a two under par round of 70.

The senior’s club championship is always a very keenly fought competition; played on Sunday August 24 at Rockmount. This year’s top qualifier Jimmy Robinson was determined to improve on his third place in the Club Championship last week and made no mistake, in winning by eight shots. Jimmy playing off five had a level par round of 72; his round included six birdies. Second place went to Tom Rossi with his round of 80 and third place went to last year’s champion Michael Stewart who had a round of 81. Junior Cowdy. The Junior Cowdy team captained by William Blyth travelled to Tandragee for their first leg against Tandragee Golf Club. Russell Jamison and David Stronge were the first pair out, their match ebbed and flowed and was tight throughout the match was eventually halved. Out second was Sean Lawell and Robert Burns; they were unable to claw back three holes they lost at the start of the back nine and lost their match 3 & 2. Roger Heasley and Jim Madden were three down after four holes; they fought like tigers and won their match on the eighteenth hole. Alex Thompson and Niall Marshall were the tail end Charlie’s but their determination shone through as they won 3 & 2. The match score was two and half to one and a half in Rockmount’s favour; a handy lead to take into the home leg next week.

The Rossmore Cup team welcomed last year’s winners Rossmore Golf Club to Rockmount for the first leg of this year’s semi-final on Sunday August 24. Team Captain Michael McCormick was well aware of the pedigree the Rossmore team had and had his team psyched up for a battle. Father and son duo William and Reece Wilson set the tone with a good 5 & 3 win. Stalwarts Colin Marshall and Stephen Walker could not match this win, losing 4 & 3. Frank Wallace and Leslie Anderson playing in the tightest contest halved their match. Gary Gorman and Neill Gowdy gave the team a real boost winning 2 & 1. The second leg will be at Rossmore next Sunday with Rockmount leading two and half to one and a half.

The junior’s fresh from their first leg four – three win at Ardglass Golf Club in the Jonny Dixon Cup, welcomed Ardglass to Rockmount on Sunday August 24 for the second leg of this year’s semi-final. The team Reece McKeown, Macauley Kinnear, Adam Douds, Andrew McClure, Cameron McDonald, Jordan Fletcher and Conor McGleenon completed a five – two win for an overall match victory of nine – five and will contest this year’s Jonny Dixon final.
