Speaking last week at the Golf Ireland stand at the PGA Golf Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida the Portrush man championed the cause once again.

“I’m very proud to come from the north coast,” said McDowell.

“Any time I talk to someone about coming over to Ireland I always tell them to go somewhere different and not just to the big cities.

“I tell them to get up to the north coast and sample the likes Portrush or go to County Down or Ballyliffin.

“Ireland has so much to offer and when the sun shines, which it does now and again, there’s no better pace on earth.

“The people at Golf Ireland do a great job promoting the game worldwide. I’m a proud ambasador and I always try and do whatever I can for all the golf courses.”

McDowell was celebrating after being voted ‘Professional of the Year’ in the Irish Golf Writers’ Association awards for 2013.

The 34-year-old was a multiple winner on tour last year, when he captured the RBC Heritage tournament on the PGA Tour and added the Volvo World Matchplay championship and Alstom French Open titles on the PGA European Tour.

The recipients will receive their awards, which have been specially designed by Tipperary Crystal, at an Awards Dinner, sponsored by Carr Golf Group, to be held at Portmarnock Golf Club.
