Rockmount bow out at semi-final stage of Ulster Fourball

After a tremendous run in the 2013 Ulster Fourball competition the Rockmount team finally succumbed to a very strong Lisburn side.

Team Captain Brendan Houston had taken his team to the semi-final stage for the first time in the club’s history.

Rockmount needed to win at least four matches at home on Sunday September 1 to overcome the deficit from the first leg.

The challenge was beyond the team and Lisburn will go forward to the final. Best wishes are extended to Lisburn Golf Club’s Ulster Fourball team in the final.

Saturday August 31 was the Wilgar Contracts sponsored four-ball better-ball competition. The entry numbers were huge as was the scoring.

John Campbell and Paul Clydesdale topped the field with 48 points, beating their nearest rivals Jonathan Grayson and Jim Hume by four points;p Jonathan and Jim had 44 points.

Three pairs scored 43 points and were placed by count back with Gary McShane and Andrew Neagle third, Garry Adair and Tony Kennedy fourth and Thomas Mearns and Paul Mearns fifth.

Warren Burnside and Conor Drummond had the best gross score on the day a one over par 73 beating two other pairs Ryan Wilson and William Wilson and Michael Stewart and David McClure with the same score on count back.

Sunday September 1 was also the date for the Past Captain’s trophy at Rockmount and the GUI Centenary Competition final at Royal Belfast Golf Club.

Sixteen clubs qualified for the Centenary Competition from four qualifying venues. Rockmount Golf Club were represented by Jim Robinson and Gordon Goodfellow.

With scoring very difficult on the slick greens Jim and Gordon finished with a very creditable 37 points which was enough to put them in fourth place.

Moyola Golf Club finished first and Ormeau Park Golf Club second.

The Past Captain’s trophy was a keenly fought contest in both the Ladies and Gents Competition. Leonie Power won the Ladies competition and Frank Wallace won the Gents competition.

Golfing Union of Ireland President, Ivor McCandless was on hand and presented both the winners with their trophies.
