The 22 year-old Limavady man lost 4-0 to New Zealander Sam Belkin in the bronze medal final of the men’s freestyle 97kg class.

McCloskey initially lost his quarter-final to eventual gold medalist Arjun Gill from Canada and when his scheduled opponent pulled out of the tournament and the repechage, the Co. Derry man went straight to the medal final.

McCloskey had taken a year out of university to concentrate on qualifying for the Games and overcame a knee and shoulder injury this year. And he’s hopeful his participation in the Glasgow Games will help promote the sport in the North West.

“Hopefully my inclusion will be a boost for the sport. There is a lot of good work going on in the area in wrestling.

“And hopefully more people will see that wrestling is a serious sport and will want to take part.”
