It was a frustrating weekend for Rea who, after a practice crash on Saturday morning, could only manage eighth on the grid for Sunday’s two races.

With temperatures in the mid-40s on the Italian track, the Ballyclare rider battled to salvage as many points as possible.

He finished seventh in race one and went two positions better to take fifth in his second outing.

“It’s been a disappointing weekend for me because it feels like we’ve made zero progress here,” said the former Larne Grammar pupil. “It was frustrating to be unable to pinpoint and fix the problems we’ve had and, while I don’t want to sound like a broken record, I feel a bit like one with my comments in the garage.”

He added: “The whole team feels like we’re under-achieving right now so we need to do our homework and fix things as quickly as possible.”
