OLYMPIC HOCKEY: Draw with Spain is not enough for Great Britain men
Great Britain's men's hockey team are out of the Olympics after they drew 1-1 with Spain in their final pool match.
Britain’s draw left them needing Belgium to beat New Zealand, but the Blacksticks won 3-1 to end GB’s hopes.
David Alegre put the Spanish ahead on nine minutes, before Sam Ward’s equaliser with seconds remaining in the opening quarter at Deodoro.
“Results had to come and we shouldn’t be relying on other teams,” said Great Britain captain Barry Middleton.
“We were there but we didn’t take the chances. Sometimes that’s how sport goes.”
Northern Ireland’s Iain Lewers (formerly Annadale), Mark Gleghorne (Antrim), and Cookstown duo Ian Sloan and David Ames were members of the squad.
