Promotion still in sight for determined Bann Ladies 3XI despite defeat against Rainey 2XI at Cookstown

This week Bann Ladies third eleven made the highly anticipated journey to Cookstown to face Rainey seconds.

As Rainey have been league leaders for most of the season Bann knew it was going to be a tough game.

A win would also secure second place for Bann and would also mean promotion for the second year in a row.

With a short warm up Bann were all set.

Rainey started strong with some great one on one and two on one play.

Bann struggled to find their shape at the start of the match however with a strong defensive line from Kate Cunningham, Rachel Groves, Jayne Scott and Gaye Campbell, Bann were able to keep Rainey at bay.

Near the end of the first half Bann began to show why they were in contention for promotion.

Bann were able to break through the Rainey back line and into the circle. Great runs from Anna Waugh and Jayne Walker on the wings meant that Bann were able to penetrate through the Rainey defence. Unfortunately they could not take advantage in the circle, with many balls becoming hit outs to Rainey.

With a few minutes of the first half to go, Rainey broke through the centre of the Bann press and had a straight run at goal. 0-1 at half time.

Feeling slightly deflated, Bann went out with their heads up in the second half. Bann were able to show strength and determination throughout the second half, protecting the back board from several penalty corners from the Rainey side.

As the second half reached its end, Bann became tired and began to realise why Rainey had held the top spot for so long.

Despite some great efforts from Gina Woods in defence, alongside Louise Beckett in goals, Bann were not able to keep the ball outside the back line and it was 2-0 to Rainey.

As the final whistle blew Bann knew that they had lost the chance to protect and secure their promotion.

However, all is not lost for the Bann side.

Promotion is still in sight for the determined side.

All that is needed is a little patience and hope as remaining matches within the league close out......sit tight all!
