Seconds lose out in close game

LURGAN Seconds were involved in a great game of rugby against Holywood on Saturday, but sadly for the Pollock Park side they came out on the wrong end of a 21-15 scoreline thanks to a late try from the visitors.

Lurgan, led by Chris Cassidy, started the game well against a depleted Holywood side who were still waiting on three players to arrive. They raced into a 10-0 lead thanks to tries from Johnny McGeown and Greg Lyness.

However, they were guilty of taking their foot of the pedal and let Holywood back into the game with a try midway through the first half after failing to retain the ball in their own half.

With Holywood’s troops boosted to the full compliment they scored again to give them a 14-10 half time lead.

The end-to-end rugby continued in the same vein in the second half with injuries and a sending off for Holywood meaning the teams were rarely even at 15-a-piece.

Lurgan took a 15-14 lead through a well-finished try from David Stanczak and looked like they might hold on for the victory.

It was not to be as Holywood crossed the line with less than 10 minutes to go to make the score 21-15.

Lurgan launched a final onslaught but couldn’t come up with the converted score they needed.
